Life à La Mode: An Afficianado’s Guide To Eating Vanilla Ice Cream
One of life's greatest pleasures is eating vanilla ice cream. Savoring each spoonful, letting the cool treat melt-your-mouth, adding a pop of fruit or on top one's favorite pie, this yummy snack is a classic and delicious treat. With all the wonderful ways to enjoy eating vanilla ice cream it should be a part of any dessert menu.
Vanilla ice cream is a versatile sweet. Frozen desserts like ice-cream sandwiches and sundae cones most often use vanilla ice cream for the dessert's base. A popular way to enjoy pie is “á la mode.” French for “according to the fashion,” this means pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Blending flavored syrups or fruits with vanilla ice cream create delicious shakes. Vanilla ice cream is an essential part of other desserts such as Root Beer floats, Banana Splits and Turtle Sundaes.
In addition to being part of many desserts, this cool eat is typically found in two forms. Soft-serve is created out of a mix by a machine. It has a smoother texture and is less dense than hand-dipped or old fashioned ice cream. Hand-dipped is churned by hand or mixed automatically. While soft-serve is served directly from the machine, the hand-dipped variety is scooped out of large containers. The hand-dipped version is more dense than soft-serve. It has a creamy texture and must be bit into, as opposed to licked, when eaten. Both forms can be eaten with a spoon.
Hand-dipped vanilla ice cream can be found in French Vanilla or Vanilla Bean flavors. French Vanilla is usually darker in color and flavored with vanilla extract. Vanilla Bean is white with dark flecks from the vanilla bean. Soft-serve can be ordered by itself or “swirled” with chocolate ice cream. It can also be dipped in chocolate, cherry or peanut butter shell topping.
By far, eating vanilla ice cream is best in summertime. In addition to being a delicious delectable, this ubiquitous temptation is integral to the long days and hot temperatures of summer. Cone shops are always part of any American boardwalk. There is no better way to finish a rousing game of mini-golf than with a delicious vanilla cone, soft-serve or hand-dipped.
Perfect for a family outing, a charming finish to a first date, a pick-me-up for a dull afternoon, summer without eating vanilla ice cream is incomplete. Like a slice of pie, life is always best served “á la mode.”
